Rabut Formation

Rabut Fm

Period:
Cambrian

Age Interval:
Drumian to mid- Guzhangian, N5

Province:
Nuratau

Type Locality and Naming

Along the R. Rabut, Turkestan ridge. B.V. Yaskovich in 1959 (457, p.13), the volume of the sv. was clarified by R.N. Abdullaev et al., 1977 (35, p.22-23). Lectostratotype on the left bank of the Rabut River.

Synonym: Rabut Suite, Рабутская св.

Lithology and Thickness

In the lower part of its section, thin-bedded clayey limestones of dark gray and brown color, interbedded with clayey slates of gray and dark gray color, gray limestones with rare layers of fine-grained calcareous sandstone. Thickness is about 500 m.

[Above] on the Mayan stage, rocks with conglomeratic limestones at the base, thin-bedded limestones and slates of gray and brownish-gray color with layers of dark quartz-siliceous rock. Thickness is 60-100 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Shallow-marine marl

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Lower and upper contacts are tectonic.

Upper contact

Lower and upper contacts are tectonic; but according to A.N. Golikov (1988), it is overlain by the Akchapan Fm.

Regional extent

Reserve part of the Turkestan Range.

Fossils

In the limestones, trilobites of the Mayan stage - Hypagnostus mirandus Hajr., H. brevifrons (Ang.), H. truncatus (Brog.), Linguagnostus tricuspis Lerm., L. kjerulfi (Brog.), Clavagnostus dentatus Hajr., Peronopsis Fallax (Linnr.) (480).

In the limestones, Late Cambrian trilobites Homagnostus ex gr. obesus Belt., H. asiaticus Hajr., Onchonotellus oburdonicus Hajr., Prochuangia minuscula Hajr. (480). In the upper reaches of Zagogtay, on this level, there are brachiopods of the Lower Cambrian - Lingulella sp., Apsotreta sp., Acrothele sp., Paterina sp., Micromitra sp.

Age

The age of the suite is dated to the Mayan stage of the Middle Cambrian-Late Cambrian. The original span, thickness, and boundaries of the suite, as given by A. and in the Stratigraphic Lexicon (441), T.I. Khairullina (480), have been significantly refined by P.N. Abdullaev, M.A. Akhmedjanov, and Z.M. Abdurazimova. From the composition of the Rabut Fm, tectonic blocks of Paleozoic rocks have been distinguished and the thickness has been reduced (35; 72). On the State Geol. Map-500 (460), the suite is accepted in the span of Middle (Amginian stage) - Upper Cambrian.
